Notes and Domino 8.5.2 - The investment continues

Building on the already popular 8.5.1 code, the next release of Notes and Domino was given its first public showing at Lotusphere. It is planned to release 8.5.2 towards the second half of the year and promises to have more new features to Client, Designer and Domino Server.

Some of the new features are much needed enhancements while others are playing catch-up. The one that will catch a lot of interest has to be 'Use Mail free of network delays and server outages'. This new feature is for office based users and effectively captures a predefined number of days worth of e-mail as an offline cache on the local hard disk (not in an nsf). The user then operates the Notes client as before and the communication to the server is handled behind the scenes but without the speed limitations of replication.

The code stream is now on the IBM managed Beta programme. Some of the new features planned are listed below.

E-mail

Sort Inbox by type of message
Close an e-mail after forwarding or replying to it
Set a default font for mail
Forward a message from the Trash folder
Sort Inbox by Last name, First name
More signature options
Save e-mails as .eml files
'HTML Size' MIME setting is now fixed at 12
Do not add Cc and Bcc recipients to Recent Contacts

Calendar

Calendar and To Do features
Calendar panes stay open/closed when you re-open Notes
View teamroom calendars on a mobile device
Add private iCalendar feeds to your Notes calendar
Offline calendars automatically update at midnight
Better handling of Facebook calendar entries
Different options when a repeating meeting falls on a weekend
View rooms and resources on your calendar

Contacts

Easier to find groups when addressing an e-mail
Easier to tell which archive you have open
Make a contact or group Private

General

Use Mail free of network delays and server outages
Go to a different folder/view, but keep the same message selected
Folders stay open/closed when you re-open Notes
No interruptions during server fail-over
Replicate and sync multiple applications at a time
