Quickplace is now Quickr!
Software releases come in all shapes and sizes, from the cosmetic to the fundamental. An indicator of where the new Quickplace release fits in this range can be seen from it's name. It's an evolution from the grim “IBM Lotus Team Workplace 6.5.1” to simply “Lotus Quickr”.
The Web cognoscenti amongst us will draw parallels with other rhyming web applications such as Flickr, and this is a conscious decision to highlight the user friendly, “web 2.0”, drag and drop approach that underlies Quickr.
So, what are we getting?
The new stuff is great and includes:
Support of technologies such as AJAX, the ability to consume and publish Atom based news feeds, blog and wiki capabilities. Wiki functionality allows improvements such as in line web editing with history, giving document authors the ability to “roll back” pages.
Integration with Microsoft Office 2000/3, IBM Productivity Suite (part of Notes 8) and Windows Explorer, allowing publishing and editing directly from these applications, and drag and drop from Explorer into and out of Quickr. This uses a set of connectors that plug into Office and Explorer, much like the Dom.Doc Enabler. In Explorer your Places will appear in the same manner as a network drive, allowing you to work directly in a Place from Windows.
Integration with Lotus Notes 7, 8 and retrospectively into 6.5 email, documents can be uploaded into Quickr and links embedded in emails as an alternative to attachments. Admins can prompt users to upload to Quickr as an alternative when they attempt to attach files to emails.
Document management capabilities including check-in, check-out, document versioning and workflow.
A set of full function templates to get you started, including document & image repositories, project management, meeting and agenda management, collaborative presentation development and a lot more. All templates are fully customizable.
In addition, after the initial release (June 29th, so you may already have it!) the following capabilities are in development:
Migration and coexistence tools for Exchange public folders and Sharepoint repositories.
Connector for Microsoft Outlook.
Integration with IBM Filenet P8 and IBM DB2 Content Manager.
What do you need to do?
For existing Quickplace users Quickr is your next upgrade, think of it as Quickplace 8. You can upgrade directly to Quickr and maintain all the functionality of your existing Quickplaces, with the option to customize your places to take advantage of the new functionality at your own pace. You can also maintain your existing place “as is”, and just use the Quickr templates and functionality for your new places.
